Let's Help Ohio Dems

Disrupt Autocracy in Ohio

"The arc of the moral universe is long. But it bends...in the direction of whoever is pushing it harder, for longer..."

—David Pepper, Saving Democracy

While the media focus on Trump, the real subversion of democracy is happening in places like Ohio, where Republicans have called a special election in the doldrums of summer in order to thwart citizen referenda on reproductive rights and gerrymandering. This is a fight where you can have a real impact now, reverberating through 2024.

What’s at stake in Ohio

The current threshold for passing citizen referenda in Ohio is a simple majority. But majority rule is anathema to the Republican agenda, so in violation of their own ban on summer elections, Ohio's Republican legislators called an August 8 election to raise the threshold to 60%. If this measure passes, voters will lose the ability to fight back against draconian new laws that are opposed by the majority of Ohioans. These include a restrictive abortion law and a bill governing what is taught in colleges. (Read about why forcing a major constitutional change onto a low-turnout ballot violates centuries of Ohio norms.)

4 Ways You Can Disrupt Autocracy in Ohio:

1. Phone Ohio Voters

Ohio Phonebanks

Republicans are counting on low voter turnout, which is typical for summer elections. Join Swing Blue to disrupt their plan by turning out Dem voters! Many are unaware of this upcoming election, so your calls will make a real difference.

If you're new to phone banking, this is an excellent place to begin. The Dem voters who we're calling are not currently being barraged by political calls, and the information you are sharing is both crucial and greatly appreciated. There will be lots of training and support as needed.

Mondays, 5:30 - 7:30 pm EDT starting Juneteenth, 6/19

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 - 7:30 pm EDT

2. Fight Voter Suppression With Postcards

Ohio Postcards

Ohio Republicans have enacted the strictest voter ID laws in the country as part of their efforts to limit voter participation. To counter these moves, Swing Blue postcards will inform people about the requirements and remind voters to bring an ID if they vote in person.

Postcards will be available to postcard hosts beginning on Juneteenth, 6/19.

3. Protect the Vote in Ohio

Protect the Ohio Vote

Voter protection is key in Ohio, especially since they are now requiring IDs of all voters. If you've worked on VoPro campaigns before, this is the best way to help Ohio now.

4. Donate to Ohio Dems

Take a minute and donate to the Ohio Democratic Party. Your contribution will fund the local efforts to win in August, and will lay the foundation for a stronger grassroots organizing effort for critical 2024 races up and down the ballot.

Pride

Voter Registration at LI Pride

Berl Hartman of Swing Blue Alliance joined intrepid volunteers from Swing Left Target Majority NYC to register voters at the Long Island Pride Parade on June 11 in Huntington, NY. They report that the event was fabulous.

Huntington is perfectly located to attract parade-goers from three Congressional districts that we need to flip in 2024, including George Santos' district, NY-03.

The group registered new voters and used innovative “Vote Tripling” postcards: voters fill out the cards pledging not only to vote, but also to remind 3 friends to vote. Swing Left will send these back to them a few weeks before election day in November.
