2022 Runoff Results
For the second year in a row, the 2022 Georgia senate seat went into a runoff election, and the stakes were high. While the Democrats had already flipped a seat in Pennsylvania to secure their majority in the Senate, the Georgia seat was critical in putting Democrats in a stronger position to advance judges and legislation. In addition, the Republican candidate, Herschel Walker, was plagued by controversy and lies, making him an unfit candidate for office. So in just a few days, Swing Blue Alliance pulled together several campaigns and projects to support the Democratic candidate, Raphael Warnock, and the voters of Georgia.
One project that Swing Blue Alliance undertook to support the runoff election was the Church Project. This initiative aimed to deliver nonpartisan “how, where, and when to vote early” information to selected churches in heavily Democratic Clayton County, just south of Atlanta. In just six short days, Swing Blue volunteers dedicated an estimated 120 hours to locating contact information for nearly 100 churches in the county and successfully contacted administrators or pastors at about 30% of them.
In addition to the Church Project, Swing Blue Alliance organized groups for canvassing, phone banking, and postcarding. Six intrepid canvassers traveled to Georgia where they knocked on doors to inform voters about the election and even drove one elderly voter to the polls. Swing Blue Alliance phone bank captains hosted two weekly phone banks, helping Georgia Dems Voter Protection contact 45,000 voters who would not have received their absentee ballots in time to mail them back. Meanwhile, the Swing Blue Alliance mailing group sprang into action, launching targeted campaigns to low- and middle-propensity Democratic voters in DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett Counties. Volunteers stepped up within a short mailing window to send a total of 51,975 letters and postcards.
In the end, Raphael Warnock won his race in Georgia, and the victory ended up being a crucial one for the Democrats by expanding their majority in the Senate. The victory in Georgia was a testament to the dedication and hard work of these organizations, and it will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the future of the Democratic Party in Georgia.
