More about this project: In Ohio, an estimated 150,000 people turn 18 every year, yet voter registration rates for youth are among the lowest nationwide. Recent voter suppression tactics in that state are purging voter rolls, and increasingly complicated processes throw up barriers to even trying to register.
Swing Blue Alliance is committed to registering as many Democrats as possible, yet finding unregistered young people is one of the hardest challenges in electoral politics. To overcome this hurdle, we have designed an innovative project that takes advantage of available data on strongly Democratic, high turnout voters in order to reach the parents with young adults in the household. Using relational organizing as a strategy, our postcard empowers the parents and gives them a tool to help their children register and to check on registration status.
Many months in the making, this innovative postcard project centers on Ohio where the senate, gubernatorial, and several house district races are among the most competitive in the country right now. Ohio has become a key path to the Senate! Like all Swing Blue Alliance projects, this data-driven project includes a research component, which allows us to analyze effectiveness and continue to improve this strategy for future races and in other states.
Postcards are easy for volunteers to process: they only require a short, handwritten message and placement of an address label and stamp on the card.
