2023 Ohio Races
The Importance of the Race – A Win for Democrats and Women
On August 8th, Ohio voters defeated a ballot measure that would have raised the threshold for passing citizen-led amendments to the Ohio constitution to 60%. Republicans admitted that their purpose was to undermine efforts to abortion rights and limit partisan gerrymandering. The Ohio ballot issue proved to be a litmus test for the strength and resilience of the reproductive rights movement’s ability to leverage democratic processes in battleground states.
Swing Blue Alliance’s Contribution
Understanding the gravity of this issue, Swing Blue Alliance, in a strategic collaboration with Ohio Dems, launched an extensive mail campaign aimed at amplifying get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts. This campaign saw the distribution of an impressive 40,000 postcards to voters across the state. Hundreds of Swing Blue Alliance volunteers also spoke with thousands of voters via phone banking to, encourage nearly 3,000 voters to get to the ballot box. These postcards and conversations were not just reminders to vote; they were informative tools designed to educate voters about the importance of Issue 1 and the broader implications it held for reproductive rights.
In addition, Swing Blue Alliance raised more than $42,000 for the Ohio race from hundreds of donors, helping the Ohio Dems get the resources they needed to win.
Impact and Success
The impact of this mail campaign, phone banking, and fundraising was critical given the heightened awareness and mobilization around Issue 1. By reaching a large number of voters and effectively communicating the significance of the ballot issue, Swing Blue Alliance played a pivotal role in driving voter turnout and informed voting. The success of this campaign is reflected in the results of the Ohio race, where informed and engaged voters made their voices heard on a critically important issue. This outcome underscores the effectiveness of grassroots campaigns in influencing pivotal ballot issues.
