In 2016, Donald Trump won Wisconsin by just 23,000 votes, making him the first Republican to take the state since 1984. This defeat was shocking to Democrats. Swing Blue Alliance knew it was going to be another tight race for the super state’s 10 electoral college votes at the start of the year, and the race in Wisconsin only got more challenging as the year went on. The state saw huge missteps in its attempt to expand mail-in voting, protests and mass unrest in the aftermath of the police shooting of Jacob Blake, and a surge in coronavirus cases across the state in the fall. It was difficult on so many fronts, but in the election, Joe Biden won Wisconsin by just over 20,000 votes. 

More than 1,800 Swing Blue Alliance volunteers supported the state with more than 50,000 actions like making phone calls, writing letters and postcards, and sending text messages to Democratic voters. This team helped flip the state back to blue and inch Joe Biden closer to victory, which was later solidified with his win in Pennsylvania. 

Volunteering for Wisconsin

Swing Blue Alliance volunteers made nearly 43,000 calls and sent nearly 8,000 postcards and letters to urge Wisconsin Democrats to vote during the election. This team of volunteers devoted nearly 4,000 hours to Wisconsin during the election, hosting more than 100 events for volunteers. 

A small number of superhosts were critical to the success of the team. One team coordinated nearly 700 volunteer shifts for the swing state. With just 20 hosts from Swing Blue Alliance for the state, this team did a huge amount of work.

With only 20,000 votes between Biden and Trump, every hour they put into the race was crucial, and the time this team put into Wisconsin helped turn the country blue.
