State-wide celebrations in VA (Virginia Mercury)
|
We. Flipped. Virginia.
|
Democrats have won both the House of Delegates and the State Senate — securing total control of the state government for the first time
since 1993
. That’s 25 years!
Here’s how today’s election in Virginia broke down by the numbers:
-
Democrats have won 14 out of our 20 target races so far
-
We’ve flipped 8 seats and held 6 critical swing seats
-
18 of our 20 target races may be decided by a margin of 10% or less
These wins are a major blow to Trump. Flipping the Virginia legislature means Dems can finally pass progressive legislation like gun control, education reform, and the Equal Rights Amendment. Plus, Dems can dismantle district maps rigged by Republicans and then draw fair electoral maps in Virginia for the next decade.
As this
NYT article
points out, Democratic victories like this one do not happen overnight. It took years of local organizing to bring Virginia back to the tipping point.
Swing Left Greater Boston will partner with local organizations on the ground to provide volunteers with meaningful engagement opportunities. Stay tuned!

Sister District MA-RI Deserves Credit for Wins in Virginia
|
Democrats flipped Virginia’s state legislature, winning a True Blue Trifecta on November 5. But that victory didn’t happen overnight — it was more than two years in the making. Sister District MA-RI volunteers were there at the beginning in 2017 providing whatever assistance the campaigns need: calling voters, writing postcards, sending texts, raising funds, providing post-it-notes for canvassers, and traveling to canvass ourselves.
This year, Sister District MA-RI called 17,909 voters (and spoke to 1,463), raised $39,049, and wrote 18,269 postcards. We did this at 218 events attended by more than 500 individual volunteers (with a total attendance of roughly 1,630) at 62 private homes and public venues across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, from South Hadley to Cape Cod and from Providence to Newburyport.
So in 2020 we’ll continue to apply ourselves to the good fight, and remind Americans that even in a presidential year, states matter. We’re fired up!

Moving Together Toward 2020
|
Don’t expect a lot of speeches … Look forward to hands-on workshops that will help you plan for both state and national elections.
Indivisible co-founder and co-director Ezra Levine will lead a working session on impeachment and the Strategy for 2020; the role of grassroots activism in moving the impeachment process forward; and how activism feeds into strategy for the 2020 election.
Swing Left Greater Boston’s workshops include:
-
Canvassing Confidential: Real stories from canvassing in Maine
-
Going the Distance: Volunteering for Campaigns in Key Battleground States
-
Making the Most of Postcarding and Other Mailings
-
Voter Registration: Register Democrats, Save the World!
-
Cross-Group Support: A Workshop to Share and Scale Together
Registration for the conference is just getting started, but all these workshops already have attendees signed up. Don’t wait to register.

Veterans Day Voter Registration Drive
|
November 11 is a great day for shopping! That’s why we’ve scheduled a voter registration trip to Scarborough, where we had a great day registering voters last Saturday. We discovered that
stores — like Walmart, Marden’s, Marshalls, and Shaws — and other locations such as the multiplex theater and local library — can be great locations to register voters.
Please honor our veterans by working to save our democracy by registering voters.
Here is the link to sign up!
Don’t delay and miss one of the last chances to register voters in Maine before
the weather closes in.
Hope you can make it!!
