Targeting Our Activism

Choosing our states

This lovely chart depicts how Swing Blue Alliance has chosen our focus states for 2024: AZ, PA, NY, NC, WI. (Thanks, Swing Blue tech team!)

Along the top are the most important states for the 2024 election, either because they're battleground states for the presidential election (AZ, WI, PA, MI, GA, NV) or because they have crucial Congressional, Senate, or Governor races (NY, AZ, CA, OH, MT, NC).

On the right are states where Swing Blue can have an exceptional impact:  states where we already have strong partnerships with local activists (PA, NC, NH, FL, VA) and states that are close to MA, so more easily accessible to our volunteer canvassers.

Of course, no state is unimportant when the stakes are so high. Luckily, activist groups are fired up across the country. We do extensive networking to make sure we don't duplicate the efforts of fellow activists.

To hear the full story of how Swing Blue decides where to put our resources, and to learn about the impact of our 2023 postcarding projects, check out the recording of the March Frontline Update.

Arizona

As we near our fundraising goal of $25,000 for Arizona through The States Project, a team of Swing Blue Volunteers visited Phoenix and Tucson this week. Their goals: jumpstart our AZ partnerships, register voters, and conduct an innovative voter registration pilot.

Visit Arizona!

At stake in Arizona:

     - Control of the AZ Senate and House

     - The Arizona Abortion Access Initiative

     - Electing Ruben Gallego to the US Senate

     - Arizona's crucial 11 electoral votes for President Biden

The Swing Blue team registered voters at the Phoenix Rainbows Festival  and also canvassed using a new tool to identify unregistered voters in predominantly Democratic neighborhoods.

Pennsylvania

Of all the battleground states, Pennsylvania has the largest number of electoral votes (19), and holding onto Senator Bob Casey's seat is necessary to maintain Democratic control of the Senate.

This week, Swing Blue piloted a texting project for PA. We trained 20 intrepid texters, who can now do their texting anytime it's convenient. We're on our way to creating an army of "do it yourself" texters to reach prospective Democrats and convince them to register to vote. Stay tuned!

We're kicking off road trips to PA this week with an exploratory visit to the Philadelphia area to organize for future canvassing trips. Join us for future trips!

Our latest postcard campaign, "Infrastructure for Philadelphia Neighborhoods," informs voters of the impact of Democratic legislation for their neighborhoods. These cards will go to low-propensity Democratic and Independent voters in West Philadelphia.

Pick up cards in Cambridge, Lexington, Medford, Watertown, Somerville, or Belmont on April 6, or in Arlington on April 7.

North Carolina

North Carolina’s 16 Electoral College votes are again up for grabs. In 2020, Joe Biden only lost by just over 1%. NC Democrats also have a good chance to elect a Dem governor and to flip enough state legislative seats to take away the Republicans' supermajority.

The Biden campaign is all in for NC and has already opened 10 campaign offices in the state. NC's dynamic new Dem party leaders are already at work registering voters and building campaign infrastructure.

Join us for our newest phone bank, calling potential volunteers in Mecklenburg County. You'll be calling friendly Democrats to invite them to social events where they can meet and get fired up to register voters and get out the vote.

Wed, Apr 10 @ 6 pm - 8 pm EDT

Sun, Apr 7 @ 6 pm - 8 pm EDT (no calls on Easter, 3/31)

New York

What? New York is a swing state??

Although the majority of registered voters in NY are Democrats, a number of congressional districts that went for Biden in 2020 elected Republicans to Congress in 2022. Flipping as many of these seats as possible back to Dems is critical for winning back control of the House.

Our victory in replacing George Santos with Tom Suozzi is the first step. We're working with partners in several NY districts on projects to register voters, recruit local volunteers, and travel to knock on doors.

Activist Afternoons

You'll find new projects and old friends at Activist Afternoons. For April 7, the actions include calls to North Carolina, postcards and more. Or come to Activist Evenings in Brookline on April 1.

What is the most effective 2024 action for Blue state residents who can't travel to a swing state? Joining a phone bank!

Here's a great article by our friends at the Sister District Project about the importance of phone banks for our political goals.

  • Yes, they're effective even though most people don't answer their phones.
  • No, they don't involve discussing politics with strangers. The provide useful information to people who want to be involved.
  • Yes, even folks who "hate making calls" enjoy the feeling that they're doing what needs to be done to win crucial elections.
