Why not combine door knocking with a little R&R (hiking, kayaking/canoeing, fishing, moose safaris, stargazing, leaf peeping, or just relaxing by the lake)? See individual campaign offices for area-specific information.

  • Allagash River Waterway
    • The 92-mile Allagash Wilderness Waterway in northern Maine is one of America’s preeminent canoe trips, traversing lakes, ponds, and broad rivers winding through scenic forests. Many outfitters provide guided trips, boats, etc.
  • Appalachian Mountain Club 100-Mile Wilderness
    • Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has the Medawisla Lodge, northeast of Greenville/Moosehead Lake. AMC acquired a number of former hunting/fish camps, so there is an option of hiking or in season, snowshoeing/cross country skiing lodge to lodge.
  • Baxter State Park/Mount Katahdin.
    • Millinocket, Maine is the gateway to Baxter State Park/Mount Katahdin. Bar Harbor is a little over two hour drive from Millinocket. Even Thoreau made it this far! The Millinocket area has hotel/motel lodging options and private campgrounds. Campsites in Baxter State Park are more rustic, but with some lean-tos. There are also some lakeside lodges between Millinocket and Baxter State Park, and a walk-in fishing camp near the park.
    • Percival Proctor Baxter’s (Maine governor from 1921-1924) fondness for the land and Maine’s wilderness led him to purchase almost 6,000 acres of land, including Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak. He donated the parcel to the state of Maine in 1931, with the condition that it be kept forever wild. Thus, roads in the park are unpaved and water must be treated within the park, including car camping areas i.e., no running water or potable water.

Nearby Katahdin Woods and Waters was designated as a national monument under the Obama administration.

    • Maine State Parks
    • Moosehead Lake
      • Ample flat water (i.e., no current) paddling, moose safaris, fish, stargazing, and just relaxing by the lake. Greenville is the main lodging center, and there are lots of lodges around the lake with on-site restaurants.
      • Greenville is the lodging center for this multi-sport area, with a wide range of recreational opportunities. There are also a wide variety of lodging options, from AAA four diamond properties, bed and breakfasts, cabins, and campgrounds. See destinationmooseheadlake.com for more information.
  • Park and Ride locations (i.e., where to leave your car if you are meeting other people)
  • Foliage Map
    • It is foliage season in New England—what are you waiting for? Let’s get out there!
