Democracy at Stake in Ohio |
|
The Ohio election on August 8 will be decided on a simple majority, but if "Issue 1" passes it will change the rules for passing future citizen initiatives. Republicans have purposely worded Issue 1 in a confusing way, but the bottom line is that if 59% voted for any future citizen initiative and just 41% voted against it, the 41% would win. |
With less than one month to go, voters are evenly split on "Issue 1", with more than a quarter still undecided. The sole purpose of Issue 1 is to undermine upcoming referenda on abortion rights and partisan gerrymandering, but because of the confusing wording of the ballot question, many voters don't know that if they vote YES on Issue 1, they are voting against future initiatives that they favor. |
This election could be decided by just a few hundred votes. Our goal is to reach 3,000 voters by election day on 8/8. We can do this if we have an average of 45 callers per phone bank. Help us fight for majority rule in Ohio! |

Help NC Dems Recruit Volunteers |
Mecklenburg County NC, where Charlotte is located, has more registered Democrats than the fifty least populous NC counties combined. Yet recent turnout has been only 45% -- the statewide average was 51%. That's about 25-50,000 votes lost to Democrats statewide. |
Swing Blue Alliance is helping Mecklenburg Dems mobilize 19,000 residents who've said they want to volunteer to boost Dem turnout. By recruiting and training volunteers now, Mecklenburg Dems will be able to develop skilled campaigners for the three county-wide elections in 2023, and test new strategies before the critical 2024 elections. |
Join us as we call self-identified NC activists to help them find their best options for volunteering. |

Postcard Plans: Virginia |
Kudos to our postcard hosts and writers, who have sent 40,000 postcards to Ohio voters. |
Next campaign: Virginia! Early voting in VA for November's election begins on September 22. The VA legislature is split, with Democrats holding a slim majority in the state Senate and Republicans controlling the House. |
Politico calls the VA elections "the most high-stakes legislative races of 2023." Our mailing campaign team is working with VA partners to have postcards ready to send within the next few weeks. |

Next Frontline Update: August 20 |
Frontline Updates will be on summer break in July. The next Frontline Update will be Sunday, August 20. |
The August Frontline Update will focus on the latest in voter protection actions. As Republicans develop new voter suppression tactics, the scope of voter protection must expand. Join us in August to find out how Swing Blue Alliance plans to fight voter suppression in 2023 and 2024. |

Swing Blue Wants to Learn About You! |
Swing Blue Alliance has again teamed up with Dr. Ronald Rapoport from the College of William & Mary and Dr. Andrew Engelhardt from the University of North Carolina–Greensboro to study YOU! These scholars focus on American political movements and American political parties. |
In the near future you'll get an email invitation from rbrapo@wm.edu to participate in an anonymous survey. If you filled it out before, please fill it out again. We especially appreciate your continued participation. We also welcome new participants. |
After the survey analysis is completed, Rapoport and Engelhardt will present the results at a future Frontline Update. Whether you volunteer with Swing Blue Alliance or just read the newsletter, we need to learn more about you. The information you provide is completely confidential. We will not have access to individual responses. |
