How can we "celebrate" Martin Luther King Day without the passage of voting rights legislation? That's what Dr. King's family is asking the President and Senate.
On January 15, the date of Dr. King’s birthday, the King family is attending a rally in Phoenix, AZ, to “restore and expand voting rights in honor of Dr. King’s legacy.” On January 17, MLK Day, the family will be in Washington, DC, rallying supporters with a march across the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and other events. They will be drawing comparisons with Dr. King’s 1965 march for voting rights across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.
You, too, can help freedom fighters in AZ and other states across the country. Join any of the Common Cause/SBA phonebanks and talk to like-minded Arizona voters. Ask these constituents to demand that Senator Sinema and other Senators pass voting rights legislation by breaking the filibuster.

Building Strong Coalitions
Sylvia Galván came from Mexico to join her husband in Western Massachusetts in the 1970s. Then, after three years back in Mexico in the 1980s – she wanted her sons to learn their native language -- she became a bilingual teacher in Holyoke, MA. Sylvia calls this period the golden age of bilingual education, while recognizing that the movement resulted in clashes within the Holyoke community.
Her concern over the conflicts prompted Sylvia to become active in multiple Latino organizations. Eventually, she served on the Southampton Democratic Committee, reaching voters through their Latino heritage. She is also involved with Indivisible/Swing Blue Alliance in Western Massachusetts and has written hundreds of postcards since 2020.
Sylvia worries that Democrat candidates are losing the Latino community and urges them to get to know Hispanic neighborhoods, offering concrete advice on how to get this group of citizens to vote.
Learn about Sylvia’s transition to activism, all she has accomplished, and her advice to Democratic campaigns.
Texting is a great way to reach people in other states about issues and candidates. Learn how with Christine Brown from Indivisible Acton Area. She'll provide training and then help you set up accounts with either Movement Labs or Move On.
