Derry Election: Springboard for Dems in NH
Building a Democratic base for Senator Hassan and Representative Pappas
Derry is one of the “reddest” towns in New Hampshire. So, while it was a disappointment, it was not a surprise that Mary Eisner lost the special election for a NH House seat on December 7.
Swing Blue Alliance chose to participate in this election for a particular reason. Our canvassing and phone calls for Eisner enabled us to energize Democratic voters in a town that doesn’t get a lot of attention from Democrats. By volunteering for Eisner, SBA volunteers gained a head-start on our plan to activate voters and get them talking about the issues.
Even though last week's was a much tougher head-to-head race, Eisner lost this special election by 200 fewer votes than in the the original November elections. The missed opportunity: Almost 5,000 Democratic voters who voted for Eisner in November 2020 didn’t turn out this week.
Door knocking matters, especially in low visibility elections! In an analysis of an earlier special election in NH this year, canvassers had a significant impact, especially when they spoke to Democratic and independent voters multiple times:
- Two conversations = 70% turnout rate
- One conversation = 40% turnout rate
- No conversations = 15% turnout rate

Millions of Voters Should Not Be Denied Access to the Ballot in 2022!
Common Cause just announced they are continuing the campaign for passage of crucial voting rights legislation -- the Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) -- into the new year. Swing Blue Alliance is right beside them in this fight! Phone banks are scheduled through February, and mailings will also continue into 2022.
We’ve already sent out 372,000 cards to eight states, and now we're distributing postcards aimed at constituents of Senator Chris Coons of Delaware. There is no deadline for mailings, although we hope individual volunteers will mail cards within one week of receipt.
To ensure you can continue to support the FTVA, Swing Blue Alliance will keep the postcard eStore open.
“We should be making it easy for people to vote, not harder,”
says President Biden. “And that’s going to remain a priority for my administration until we get it done. Inaction is not an option.”
Free and fair elections are the very essence of our democracy. Swing Blue Alliance is proud to continue our collaboration with Common Cause to assure unobstructed access to the ballot for all eligible voters.

SBA is Right Fit for Florida Intern
Growing up in Palm City, Florida, Kiran Houri was surrounded by people who have opposite views and values to her own. When Kiran came to Tufts in 2020, she wanted to get involved in an organization “where they have shared values and somewhere [she] could make a difference.”
This fall, Kiran’s internship at Swing Blue Alliance allowed her to research and write articles for the SBA website and to support SBA organizers. Kiran has straightforward advice for all her peers: Get involved in any way you can, “whether it's a friendly debate with someone who differs from you or educating one person on a small thing, that is important.”
