After you watch the film:
- Please take a minute to rate Slay the Dragon. If you enjoyed the film, please consider rating it on Rotten Tomatoes. It has a “100% Fresh” critics score out of 47 reviews, but an audience score of only 62%. Many viewers aren’t basing their ratings on the merits of the film, but rather on their opinion.
- Consider donating to three organizations (if you are able) leading the fight in Michigan and Wisconsin against voter disenfranchisement:
- Black Leaders Organizing for Communities (BLOC). A nonprofit organization whose goals are: 1) Invest in our community and engage citizens to build long-term political power. 2) Ensure a high quality of life and access to economic opportunity for members of the Black community in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin. 3) Empower Black leaders with the tools, training, and resources needed to organize and be represented at all levels of government. - The People. The nonprofit organization founded by Michigan’s Katie Fahey to support nonpartisan good governance reforms nationwide. The People’s mission is to gather and enable everyday Americans to find common ground and take action together to create a more responsive government of, by, and for the people. Donate here
- Campaign Legal Center (CLC) (Ruth’s organization). Advancing democracy through law and fighting for every American’s right to participate in the democratic process, this nonpartisan organization uses tactics such as litigation, policy advocacy, communications and partnerships to win victories that result in a more transparent, accountable and inclusive democracy. - Other Resources
- John Lewis’ Op-Ed. Both David and Ruth referenced the inspirational op-ed by John Lewis published at the time of his death.
- Michigan Redistricting Commission. Katie talked about Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s commitment to publicizing information about the newly-appointed Redistricting Commission and how much Katie has enjoyed perusing the comments of the finalists on their applications and watching the videos on the site of the process she worked so hard to see enacted coming to fruition.
Special thanks to Bill Mengebier and Kathleen Long from Indivisible Chicago for organizing the event and compiling the above resources. Thanks, too, to Matt Badanek, Executive Administrator of Katie’s new group, The People, for making the event happen, and Darcey Regan, Indivisible Chicago Alliance, Executive Director for doing such a formidable job as moderator.
