The Need

An exciting experiment run by Swing Blue Alliance in Virginia in 2023 showed that handwritten candidate postcards may have a significant effect on vote choice.  It is critical that we repeat this experiment in the November 2024 election so that we can continue to learn what works and to share that knowledge with the progressive community.  Candidate cards will comprise the bulk of the postcards sent in 2025 when tens of thousands of Democratic candidates will be running for elected office, including state legislative office, county commissions and mayoral, city council and school board races.

Time is running short.  To obtain valid results all 31,275 cards must be sent out by October 21st.  There is a 300 card minimum ($66) plus shipping.  Please fill out this form and we’ll be in touch with you same day.

About the Race

Democrats have narrowly taken back the PA House but Republicans still control the PA Senate (28-22), blocking the ability of PA Gov. Shapiro and Democrats in the PA House to get things done. Democrats have a chance this year to take back four of the Republicans’ state Senate seats and Nicole Ruscitto [SD-37] is the Democrats’ best pickup opportunity. Taking back the Senate is also important to preserving democracy since the PA House and Senate have more election deniers than any state legislature and it is important to deny these election deniers the possibility of thwarting the will of the voters in PA through a fake slate of electors.

Nicole Ruscitto is a dedicated educator, coach, and mom, who brings a deep-rooted connection to the district she is running to represent. Born and raised in Pleasant Hills, she grew up in a family of public educators and experienced firsthand the values of hard work, resilience, and solidarity that define District 37.

She followed in her family’s footsteps in her own 27-year career as a public educator. During that time, she served as a vocal advocate for both her students and her fellow teachers. She later represented her community as a councilwoman, where she worked on causes ranging from protecting public health to economic development.

We will be sending candidate postcards, based on the successful impact that such postcards had in the 2023 VA House of Delegates races, to 31,275 Pennsylvanians in Nicole’s district in Allegheny County, west of Pittsburgh. More info on Nicole Ruscitto can be found  at https://nicoleforpa.com/

Postcards are easy for volunteers to process: they only require a short, handwritten message and placement of a stamp on the card.

These postcards need to be mailed by volunteers by Oct 21 at the latest.  The print materials will be sent from Stamford, CT once the order is paid for and may require a day or two to arrive.

We will be conducting a randomized control trial on this intervention and compare the difference in turnout between individuals who receive the cards and those who don’t. We will examine the percentage of votes cast for the Democratic candidate by precinct in order to measure the card’s effect on vote share.
