Headed to the Swing Blue Alliance Outdoor Social on Sunday?
If you want to be a more effective conversationalist, there is no better place to learn than at Communications Skills for Volunteers. This class draws from the concept of motivational interviewing, which requires the speaker to resist the desire to correct and lecture, to understand both speakers’ motivations, to listen with empathy, and to empower the other person.
This course is ideal preparation for the Volunteers T*B*D, which recruits activists in swing states. You can also apply these skills to other phonebanks and canvassing activities.
Get a taste of the course with this video. Then come, learn, get handouts to support your skills, and practice one on one at Communications Skills for Volunteers.
How DO you talk with conservative women about racism? Learn how at the Kickoff Event for our Postcards to Conservative Women Voters project!
At the meeting, Deanna Hobbs of Galvanize Action, our campaign partner, will explain how the project hopes to tie the values of traditionalist women to positive associations with key Democratic stances while pushing back against “grievance narratives" and misleading GOP talking points.
Will it work? The four-month project includes a formal randomized control test to research which messages are most effective with this voting group. At the meeting, you‘ll see the designs for postcards with varying themes that will go out to 30,000(!) women in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Hear more about the research behind the project, the images we will use, and what we hope to learn at our online kickoff event.

With the state primaries over just last week, All In for NC has already geared up for a number of key races. We’re supporting candidates who’ll be setting and enforcing laws that control NC elections and public policy.
At the All In for NC Monthly Meeting, you’ll meet three rising stars who just won their primaries:
Mary Wills Bode, who is running in Wake/Granville Counties (SD 18) for State Senate, chaired the NC Redistricting Commission three years ago.
Diamond Staton-Williams, who is running for State Representative in Cabarrus County (HD 73), is a nurse, health care administrator, and town councilor.
Carla Catalan Day, who is running for the Republican-held House of Representatives seat in Forsyth County (HD 74), is a public health administrator and small business owner.
You’ll also get the inside scoop on upcoming phonebanks, fundraisers, and other events in NC.
If you want to support these and other accomplished Dems, people who can – and must – win to protect democracy in the state, the All In for NC Monthly Meeting is a great place to start.
Put everything you learned at Communications Skills for Volunteers (see first article) to good use by recruiting volunteers.
Many experts say that fewer door knocks in 2020 put Democrats at a disadvantage. Now that the North Carolina and Pennsylvania primaries are over, our partners on the ground in these critical states need all the volunteers they can get to knock on doors. You can help by asking past volunteers in swing districts to put their feet where their hearts are!
Learning Corner sessions are co-hosted by Indivisible Acton Area, Swing Blue Alliance, and Indivisible Mass Coalition in collaboration with volunteers at the MAssachusetts Grassroots Information Center, a Slack workspace for exchanging information, encouraging connections among groups, and building activist momentum across the state.
