Frontline Update: How is SBA Protecting Democracy?

Frontline Update: Registering Voters

Democracy depends on registering the masses of people who are likely to vote for Democrats in the coming elections. Last month’s Frontline Update explained all we are doing to register voters and save democracy. Also, remember to sign up for next month's update on June 1.

Voter Registration

Who Are These Unregistered Voters?

There is a huge pool of potentially Democratic unregistered voters in the US today. The first step of getting these individuals to the polls is to get them registered. Indeed, newly registered voters are much more likely to cast their ballots.

The 2022 US Census keeps track of registered voters. Of eligible 18-24 year olds, only 49% reported being registered. For women ages 18-44, that number is 60% ... for Blacks, it's 65% ... and for Hispanics, it's 59%. In general, 73% of unregistered voters are young, people of color, unmarried women, and/or disproportionately working class.

In addition, about 13% of the population (40 million) moves each year. Among them, many people who are eligible to vote forget to reregister in their new district.

Democracy depends on getting these individuals to the polls, and the first step is to get them registered.

What Does Canvassing Look Like?

Canvassing 101

Have you ever gone door-to-door, talking to potential voters? Whether you answer yes or are simply wondering what it would be like, you’ll want to attend the online Canvassing 101 workshop.

The class will explain SBA's approach to knocking on doors and engaging likely Democrats. You’ll learn what to say and how to use the software tools that make it easy. You’ll also get tips that make your experience more efficient, effective, and fun!

Wed, May 22, June 12 & 17 @ 6 - 7 pm EDT

What Can You Do to Increase Voter Registration?

CALL:

Contact a Few Colleges

Can you spend a few hours helping Swing Blue Alliance research which colleges in Pennsylvania are the best targets for registering young voters?

We need volunteers to contact specific colleges and community colleges (we have a list!). We hope to find out if, where, and when the schools would allow us to come to their campuses and help their students register.

Reaching out to young people is the best way to engage them to participate in our democracy; school campuses are an ideal place to meet young people where they are.

This is a great opportunity for those who want to help with voter registration but can’t travel! If you’re interested or want more info, email berl.hartman@gmail.com.

Help Break the Supermajority in North Carolina

Come hear Heather Cox Richardson, Rep. Robert Reives, and Daniel Squadro

Join us at a Zoom Fundraiser to Break the Supermajority in North Carolina. Keynote speakers include Heather Cox Richardson, author of Letters from An American; Rep. Robert Reives, Democratic Leader of the NC House of Representatives; and Daniel Squadron, Co-Founder & Executive Director of The States Project.

This year, Democrats are spending millions on the NC governor’s race to defeat the extreme rightwing nominee Mark Robinson. However, a Democratic governor is not enough: The Republican supermajority in the NC House can still override the governor's veto.

The States Project aims to break this supermajority by netting at least one additional seat in the House. Defending or flipping just a few seats is within reach if we supply Democratic candidates in those states with early funding now.

Your donation of $100 (or more!) is your ticket to this blockbuster zoom event.

May 28 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Contribute before midnight on Mother's Day and a generous donor will match all donations!

We encourage you to give generously and to share this invitation with friends and family members committed to defending democracy.
