March 20, 2021 Swing Left Greater Boston Newsletter

Posted on March 21, 2021

Susan Labandibar
Dear Friends,
On June 11, 2018, the first edition of the Swing Left Greater Boston newsletter was sent to everyone on our mailing list - all 80 people. Today, the newsletter has over 18,000 subscribers. Much has changed since that first issue went out. Together, we took back the House, the Senate, and the White House and participated in multiple state-level elections.

After the Georgia runoffs, Swing Left Greater Boston took a break. Now we’re back from hibernation and ready to serve you. Our mission has not changed: We will continue to be your best resource for actions to save our democracy and turn our country Blue.

In 2021, Democrats are facing new challenges. Over the next two years, Republicans will try to take away our gains in the House and Senate, while continuing to build power in the states using all means at their disposal.

Read on to find new action opportunities that work for you.

VOTER PROTECTION

Senate Debate Begins March 24

House Passes H.R. 1 Voter Protection Bill
Republicans are doing everything they can to suppress the vote across the country. Voter suppression is an attack on the very measures that gave more people access to the ballot box in 2020.

In response, Democratic lawmakers have introduced the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1). The bill expands voter registration, allows voting by mail, outlaws voter purging, restores parts of the Voting Rights Act, and implements fair redistricting.

The House has already passed the bill, and Senate begins debate this week.

Call to action

There is nothing more important to the future of our country than
putting an end to voter suppression.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

Berl Hartman Receives Field Team 6 2020 Award for Maine Voter Registration Campaign

Berl Hartman
In the early days of the Swing Left campaign to register voters in Maine, volunteers partnered with Field Team 6, whose slogan is Register Democrats. Save the World. The Field Team 6 folks honed their skills by registering thousands of new Democrats to help flip four California districts from Red to Blue in 2018. Field Team 6 taught us their methodology; provided voter registration training; developed Maine-specific material for us; pinpointed likely locations; and helped us recruit volunteers.

On Friday, March 12, Berl Hartman, who coordinated the Swing Left/Field Team 6 Voter Registration Drive in Maine, was one of five volunteers to receive the Field Team 6 Volunteer of the Year Award. The award states that it was given to Berl “in recognition of virtuosic organizing skills, countless hours of driving, bravery in the face of extreme cold, Houdini-like ability to escape every bureaucratic obstacle, and the utter badass-ness of registering voters throughout the Maine winter. Thank you for literally helping save the world.”

NORTH CAROLINA

Turn NC from Purple to Blue

Turn NC Blue
What are North Carolina leaders thinking about the fight to turn NC Blue? How can you help? Find out at this year's first All in for NC event. You'll hear from several NC leaders:
  • Aimy Steele was the candidate for State House in 2018 and 2020; she’s currently forming organizations that target under-voting minority and progressive residents based on Stacey Abrams’ approach in Georgia.
  • Devon Robert is Training Director of Lillian’s List, the pro-choice Democratic women's political and training organization.
  • Theo Luebke is co-director of Carolina Federation, a statewide organization that brings local people together across race and the rural-urban divide to build political and electoral power in their own communities and across North Carolina.
