Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What Will I Be Doing As a Volunteer?
You’ll be knocking on doors in a designated area or “turf” to talk with registered Dems and Independents who we believe may consider voting for a Democratic Senate candidate in 2020. We’re trying to identify which issues are most important to them to help inform our strategy. You’ll record their answers with a smartphone app called MiniVan. We also need drivers for these days.
Do I Need Experience?
No experience is needed, but you should bring a smartphone. At each location, a canvass captain will help you get started. You’ll have a chance to review the script, familiarize yourself with your turf, and practice using MiniVan.
Can My Organization/Huddle/Neighborhood Group Participate Together?
Yes! Our hope is that existing networks will mobilize themselves and make a fun day of it in southern Maine. Just be sure that everyone in your group registers. If several of you will be coming in one car, please notify (Tim Grose at 207-292-9130 or tgrose@mainedems.org) so we can pair some of you up with local drivers to maximize your coverage.
Do I Need a Car to Canvass?
It helps to have 2-3 people per car. Depending on the density of the neighborhood, you can park the car and everyone can canvass, or the driver can stay with the car while the passengers canvass.
Does Canvassing Take All Day?
No. You can complete a canvass shift in 3-4 hours and leave plenty of time for leaf peeping, apple picking, shopping, or exploring a picturesque Maine town. Make a day trip of it!
I’m Traveling from a Distance. Will There be Home Stays?
Yes. We do have a limited number of local housing options. If you’d like to stay overnight, please complete this form and we’ll do our best to match you with a place to stay. Please note that housing is limited, so we will prioritize people who are traveling from a distance. for more information.
Can I Help Unseat Susan Collins Some Way Other Than Canvassing?
Yes! We are also looking for volunteers to register voters, phone bank, call, text and write postcards. To find out about all the ways you can make a difference, visit the Swing Left Greater Boston calendar. Do check the calendar from time to time, as events will be added now through the election.
What Do I Need to Bring With Me?
Please remember to bring appropriate clothing (including rain gear and umbrella, if necessary), comfortable shoes, water, snack, a fully charged mobile device, battery pack (if using your cell phone GPS and MiniVan), and sunscreen. Please check the weather (www.weather.gov or other site), and dress accordingly.
Download MiniVan and setup an Action ID before you go. Directions and how to/training here.
