The state of Virginia has elections in 2025 for the office of Governor, Lieutenant Governor and for the House of Delegates. Because this is an odd-year election, fewer people are likely to vote and efforts to increase turnout are likely to be impactful. We will be calling South Asian voters in Virginia to encourage them to vote in the November elections.
We will be calling South Asian voters in swing districts represented by Republicans to ask them to contact their representatives about the huge funding cuts the Trump administration is proposing to the NIH and NSF. They plan to cut 38% from the NIH and 55% from the NSF and have already withheld $3.8 billion dollars in science funding. Furthermore, billions of dollars in funding to universities and research centers has been delayed relative to previous years and the administration plans to further reduce the number of grants approved by paying money for multiyear grants up-front instead of year by year. The Senate Appropriations Committee has marked up an NIH-friendly bill that would increase funding for FY 2026 and stop the change to multiyear funding. We will be asking voters to contact their house members in support of similar provisions.
