Our national parks are under attack. The republican administration fired several thousand NPS and NFS workers under the guise of “cutting costs.” The NPS warned that the staffing levels were already insufficient to support the park usage. We are already seeing the impact as both Yosemite and Grand Canyon have had to relay openings due to staffing losses. Over 100 million visitors are expected this summer alone, and the loss of staff is not only inconvenient but potentially dangerous.
Additionally, the republican administration removed the national environmental policy act regulations in order to start fast-tracking lumber production on 113 millionaires of national forestry- practically half of all the land managed by the US forest service. This order bypasses environmental laws and regulations that are meant to ensure that all use of public lands are done sustainably. Appropriate forest management is crucial for wildfire prevention, clean water and air, carbon capture, and wildlife, including the preservation of endangered species. This unregulated logging expansion risks the long term viability of our public lands and will impact air quality, water quality, and wildfire risk, which compromises public safety.
Third, this republican administration plans to cut 65% of the EPA’s workforce. We need to keep our EPA fully staffed. This republican administration also withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement which is a promise to limit carbon emissions and slow down the temperature increase of our planet.
