SUPER STATE: NORTH CAROLINAAll in for NC |
Swing Left Greater Boston has been building its North Carolina team — All in for NC — since early July. Now, we’re ready to hit the streets … or at least get a running start on virtual meetings, the mail, and phone lines. North Carolina is a triple-play state Dems have a lot to gain in winning the elections up and down the slate … and our chances are rising. The presidential race is (as it has been for decades) very close. The incumbent Republican Senator won his seat with a margin of under 1%. Some say the Democrats could take back both state houses this year, thus ending a decade of legendary Republican gerrymandering, voter suppression, and right-wing policies (remember the bathroom bill?). Getting on the line We’re starting the campaign with phone banks, the most effective way to talk directly with voters in the COVID-19 era. We now have three weekly evenings – Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday – with Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings coming soon. Working with the NC Coordinated Campaign, we’re going for the top of the ticket: electing Biden for President and Cal Cunningham for Senate, as well as reelecting Gov. Roy Cooper, who won 2016 by 10,000 votes. Our first state legislative candidate is Dr. Frances Jackson in North Carolina House District 45. Winning her district will be key to flipping the legislature and getting out new voters for the entire ticket. Exploiting the mail Especially given the successful fight against USPS cuts, we’re planning multiple postcard/letter-writing campaigns, both partisan and nonpartisan. One program, for example, aims to restore to the voting rolls over 500,000 names that have just been purged by county officials. We’ll be coordinating letter writing with ongoing texting and calls. Collaboration SLGB is working in partnership with many other organizations. The first Massachusetts activist to organize a weekly phone bank for Cal Cunningham was Elizabeth Silver with the Western Mass Take Back Our Democracy Coalition. Elizabeth has already trained many of the phone bank captains who will lead the charge. Force Multiplier, our fundraising partner, has already brought in $142,000 for the Cal Cunningham campaign. Strong alliances and active volunteers are what it takes to turn NC blue.

VBM UPDATE
Whether or Not the
|
It’s good news that we’re winning the fight against USPS cuts. At the same time, it’s still important to circumvent bottlenecks, both in the postal system and at elections offices.
VBM (vote-by-mail) campaigns simply ask everyone to request a VBM ballot right now and to return the ballot itself as early as possible. Why? Because it’s far easier and more efficient to handle a slow, steady stream of mail than cope with a last-minute deluge. Encourage voters to VBM at any of these events. |

ALL ABOUT JOEBuilding Boston’s Biden Team |
We’re partnering with Greater Boston Young Dems to expand Biden’s volunteer base in Boston. We’ll find the new supporters, and they’ll be able to begin phoning into critical Super States right after the convention.
Let’s make sure we have enough hands on deck!

SUPER STATE: WISCONSINStop Voter Suppression In Its Tracks |
Fighting voter suppression is the key to turning our country blue and saving our Democracy. Republicans are planning to spend $150 million on voter suppression. We can’t let them steal another election!
You’ll recognize some of their tactics: challenging vote by mail, purging voter rolls, and sowing confusion. Wisconsin Republicans are famous for these tactics. In the last primary, they closed all but 5 of the 180 polling places in Milwaukee. In 2018, thanks to gerrymandering, Republicans received only 45% of the vote but won 63% of the State Assembly seats.
