Why Arizona?
Arizona is a key battleground state with several crucial races that could have a significant impact on the outcome of the Presidential race and the control of both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. The state’s 11 electoral votes are highly sought after, and the outcome of the races in Arizona could determine the overall result of the election.
Arizona is also key to gaining full control of Congress. Senator Kyrsten Sinema, former Democrat turned Independent, is not seeking re-election, so now is our chance to retake her Senate seat and there are two flippable congressional seats for the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona: AZ-01 and AZ-06.
The state’s legislature is also very close to flipping control from the GOP to the Democrats, which would have major implications for the state’s political landscape, how they run elections, and decisions around crucial issues like reproductive rights, public school funding, gun safety laws and voting rights in a state. The State Senate and State Legislature are each within two seats of control.
Finally, a critical, divisive issue is on the ballot in Arizona: Abortion. This issue has proved to turn out voters as it is a top issue for 1 in 8 US voters, according to a KFF survey.
With headquarters in Massachusetts, Swing Blue Alliance is new to Arizona as it’s usually a focus for activists on the west coast. But with so many groups focused on California taking back 6 key congressional seats this year, we’ve forged the new partnerships needed to support AZ Democrats.

What are the results so far?
Swing Blue Alliance collaborated with Working America in January 2024 to start planning several trips to Phoenix and Tucson. In March, Swing Blue Alliance volunteers traveled to the state to build relationships with the Maricopa County Democrats and the Democratic leadership in 4 swing districts within Maricopa and Tucson. Volunteers helped register voters at the Phoenix Rainbow Festival where tens of thousands gather to promote unity, visibility, and self-esteem for LGBTQ+ people in Arizona.
Following the festival, some volunteers continued on to Tucson, canvassing and collecting signatures across party lines to get the Abortion Access Amendment on the ballot, while others worked with the Maricopa County Democratic Party trying out a program to find unregistered voters in heavily Democratic districts and help them register.
We have been back in Maricopa since Labor Day dedicating our energies to getting campaign materials and Vote the Democratic Slate cards to the doors of thousands of voters in districts with high numbers of voters registered as Democrats, but historically low-turnout. The aim is to increase their turnout and the results in the first 2 weeks of early voting have been extremely encouraging! Volunteers in Tucson are using the lists that included those who signed the petition to canvass and GOTV in a district that came very close to turning blue, and can do so with an extra push.
