FOR THE PEOPLE

Whither Goest Voting Rights?

McConnell Fights Voting Rights
In the next month or two, the U.S. Senate will determine what democracy will look like for a long time. If you want your electoral activism to make a difference, the For the People Act must pass. This is your opportunity to protect voting rights. Now is the time to leave it all on the field.

WEST VIRGINIA

Passionate About Voter Protection?

Start in West Virginia
West Virginian Sonja Murray is the leader of VoPro Pros. She has returned to her home state to expand the VoPro community of volunteers who are passionate about voter protection year-round. VoPro Pros works directly with excellent, local, on-the-ground grassroots organizations across the country, in this case, For the Future of West Virginia.

This is your chance to become part of this community, to empower voters in this swing state and beyond. Join this vibrant group and counterbalance the calls that have been flooding into Manchin’s office against H.R. 1/S. 1.

VoPro Pros is looking for experienced phone bankers to make calls and/or provide phone bank support. (There will be training for phone bank support staff.)

The goal is to make 100,000 calls per week, over six weeks, for a total of 600,000 calls. The more volunteers, the easier it will be. Call to action

Phone banks will run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings
and Sunday afternoons through mid-June.

DEMOCRACY IN THE BALANCE

Preparing for the 2022 Midterms

Strengthening Our Democracy
If you care about the state of democracy in our country, you’ll definitely want to participate in this three-part series of interactive forums, hosted by the Arlington Democratic Town Committee. These events gives both experienced activists and first-timers specific insights and concrete ways to make a critical difference.

At the first session, on  Thursday, May 6, you’ll hear the perspectives  of former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Tony Mack of Movement Voter Project, and learn about supporting the For the People Act from Herb Meisner of Common Cause. Then, you’ll get a chance to  engage in breakout strategy sessions led by Susan Labandibar of Swing Left Greater Boston, Marlene Silva of Mass Dems Organizing Hub, and Lala Wu of Sister District.

Come help determine the results of the 2022 elections

Online, Thursday, May 6 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

PENNSYLVANIA

~Road Trip!~

PA Road Trip
Here’s your personal invitation to visit Pennsylvania’s District 22 for one of the first post-COVID SLGB canvassing trips. You’ll be supporting State Rep. Marty Flynn in the May 18 special election for state Senate.

Flynn's running in a district where Democratic voter registration advantages in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties have shrunk to their lowest levels in more than two decades. With voter suppression and gerrymandering on the PA docket, it’s critical that Dems win this Senate seat.

Call to action

Join Lisa Zankman, Paula Joseph, and other great PA supporters in District 22 on the weekends of May 8 and/or May 15.

Canvass in PA District 22!

Questions? Feel free to reach out to Lisa or Paula.

  • Out-of-state: GA special election; NH special election; recruitment of voter protection volunteers in Wisconsin; environmental voter project into Texas
  • Pop-up training: How to use Mobilize America, Canvassing 101, How to Run a Zoom Meeting, Storytelling for Change
  • Breakout rooms: Democratic Committees brainstorm on best practices for improving local organizations
  • Independent work (which you can join!): Reach out to volunteers with whom you engaged during the 2020 election cycle; learn other actions that might interest them; clean up email lists
A Typical Agenda
  • 2:45: First time participants come early for Organizing Hub 101
  • 3:00: Official start time
  • 4:45: Social time and debrief

NEW ENGLAND

New England Orgs Team Up
for H.R. 1/S. 1

Common cause and SLGB
Swing Left Greater Boston has a new partnership with Common Cause. This organization’s focus -- to hold power accountable through lobbying, litigation, and grassroots organizing -- dovetails perfectly with SLGB strategies.

Together, we’re calling folks in NH, ME, and VT, asking them to pressure their senators to speak up. We’re urging them to support filibuster reform so the Senate can pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1).
