Save the World in Sunny Florida
|
Registering Democrats in Maine is fun and rewarding. Berl
Hartman can tell you: She and her team registered 1,200 this summer and fall.
With snow on the
ground in Maine, Swing Left Greater Boston and Field Team Six have now set our
sights on sunny Florida.
Palm Beach, Sarasota, Port St. Lucie, and Miami are among the destinations volunteers from Massachusetts have chosen to register voters.
Want to join the fun? Field Team 6 provides training and voter
registration support, and Swing Left Greater Boston connects you with other
volunteers. Some supporter housing is available.

Postcarding workshop at Indivisible MA’s 2019 conference
|
Hard Data on the Effectiveness of Postcarding
|
At the Indivisible MA 2019 Conference on December 7, Susan Labandibar led a workshop on the effectiveness of postcards and other mailings. She focused on work in Florida, where she contributed to a pilot study with JoAnne DeVries, chair of the Sarasota County Democratic Party.
In the presentation, Susan explained that:
-
Vote-by-mail registrations increased by 2.75% in those precincts that received the postcard.
-
The effectiveness of mailings like these is contingent on numerous variables pertaining to geography, demographics, and election characteristics.
-
Local organizations with on-the-ground knowledge of the voter population often have effective mailing projects in mind but need more resources to implement them.
In response, Swing Left Greater Boston and other Massachusetts groups are collaborating with the Sarasota County Democratic Party to send postcards encouraging registered Democrats to vote by mail.
Swing Left Greater Boston provides support, data management, and data analytics for postcard event hosts who want to maximize the efforts and contributions of their volunteers.

Democratic voters have opportunities to improve the political, economic, and physical environment of Maine — and the US — across the board.

Maine Needs Democrats in DC
|
Here’s what’s at stake.
The Political Situation
Dems swept Maine in 2018, winning the governorship and a congressional seat as well as flipping the state senate to make the entire state legislature blue. At the same time, US Senator Susan Collins still has some support among Dems, even after her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh. Everything is close: State Representative Jared Golden won his seat in CD 02 by a 1% margin.
The Economy
Maine is facing economic challenges within the state. Despite economic success in some areas of the state, poverty persists, particularly in rural areas. As paper mills and other manufacturing plants fold, there are fewer good, well-paying union jobs, and laid-off workers need training and better access to technology. Insufficient Internet access is crippling economic growth, especially in remote areas.
The Environment
Global warming has the potential to cripple the state. Temperatures in the Gulf of Maine have increased 99% faster than the rest of the world’s oceans. Already, the warming has affected commercial fishing, especially lobster, shrimp, clams, oysters, scallops, and ground fish. Long term, damage to public and private property could be astronomical. The impact on Maine’s $3.5 billion tourism economy would be devastating.
Given these issues, Swing Left Greater Boston is focusing on Maine as a Super State in which we can make a difference. Check out upcoming

Why would Indivisible-MA and Swing Left both want you — a busy activist who’s already inundated with emails — to join YET ANOTHER communication platform? To answer that question, let’s turn to Caroline Kerrigan, who just joined both the Swing Left and the Indivisible-MA Slacks: “Thank you! Slack is an email-inbox saver. I’m a huge fan.”
As activists, we’re working together and sharing information — A LOT. The weight of all that information can be overkill for anyone’s inbox. By moving your activist conversations to Slack, you free up your inbox as well as the inboxes of your compatriots, colleagues, and co-organizers.
Check out this
brief summary of the Slack platform
